He asked to abjure the realm of England.

Verdict: Guilty; no lands or holdings, but goods and chattels worth 35s., for which Ilmer responsible. He was told to cross the sea from Southampton within twelve days.

191. Bledlow, Saturday 31 August 1381.

Vills: Bledlow, Saunderton, 'Great Risborough' and 'Litde Risborough'.\

Jurors: Geoffrey Hugendon, John Reynham, John Matthew, Thomas Andreu, John Kubbel, Robert Taylour, Robert Priesse, John Kughgel, John Semere, John atte Mede, John Coupere and John Coltman.

Verdict: On Sunday 25 August 1381 William Massy of 'Bristowe', Richard Fitzrichard of the same, Robert de Brustowe, William Towke of 'Blithe' in Lincolnshire, Richard Fauconer of 'Halys' in Staffordshire, and Thomas Merser and William Matthew of Ilmer, came by night to Bledlow and feloniously broke into the rectory, and entered it. They feloniously killed John Northern, servant of Master Roger Otery, parson of the said church, there on the Thusday before the said Saturday [sic] with a sword worth 6d., and they feloniously stole a missal book, a silver-gilt chalice and other ornaments of the said church, and three horses, silver vessels and other goods and chattels from the said Rector, 40s. in gold and silver from Alexander, parson of Chinnor church, and 30s. from Walter, chaplain of Bledlow parish church, who were there at the time. They fled at once; no goods or chattels. The jurors also say that William Melton of Wycombe, Isabella Hardyconte of Wycombe and Walter Cardemakere of West Wycombe received them at Wycombe on the following Sunday, knowing them to be felons and to have committed these felonies. Bledlow responsible for 6d. deodand.

Massy, FitzRichard, Robert of Bristol, Toukes, Fauconer and Mercer were outlawed 6 April 1390 (438). William Mathew of Ilmer had a royal pardon (438) (on 30 January 1382: C 67/29, m.16). Richard Fauconer escaped from gaol and abjured the realm (222); but he was recaptured, so must have strayed from his route; he appears to have escaped a second time, and two sheriffs (Thomas Sackville and John de Aylesbury) were amerced for his escapes (JUST 3/164 m. 1). At his subsequent trial at Aylesbury on Monday 25 May 1383, he pleaded benefit of clergy and was handed over to the bishop of Lincoln's ordinary. He had no chattels (JUST 3/164 m.2). Cf CPR 1381-85, pp.271,481. On 28 July 1391 at Aylesbury Walter Cardemakere of West Wycombe was acquitted of receiving Massy and his gang after they had murdered Northern (479). William Melton and his wife Isabella (Hardyconte), also accused of receiving them, had a pardon dated 23 May 1382, ratified finally in 1391 for William and 1400 for Isabella (519). Roger Otery had been presented to Bledlow church in 1344. At his death, John Cassels was presented on 24 September 1389.
